My Precious Gems

What is God teaching me lately? He seems to put child after child into my life! Yeah, it’s interesting & wonderful, but scary as well. This post is especially dedicated to a couple of children whom I dearly love. Yes, children whom Miss SY Wong loves. Strange? Hard to believe? Let me assure you that it’s true.

1st in the list is Abigail Tan (age 9). Yeah, no one can take her place la. She’s the one kid who can brighten my day with her somewhat nonsensical remarks & brilliant ideas. Heh. I love her ever so much. She’s the one child who taught me a lot about life & how to actually love a child for who they are. Because her parents are usually too busy for her, I’ll somehow feel very oblige to be there for her whenever she needs an adult to help her out or to just accompany her. *sigh* This girl will also accompany me to do crazy things la, like go for a hair-cut, buy ice-cream, have dinner together (just the both of us), etc.

No one can come in 2nd place but Nichol Ng (age 8). This girl is very special. I rarely spend a lot of time with her as compared to Gail, but the things that she did for me is heart-melting. The little notes & letters that she writes to me are…aw…really cute & puts me to shame for not being loving enough towards her. I confess that I love Gail more, but Nichol is also too special to miss. She’s very thoughtful and caring :) I spent the past couple of days with her, & got to know her sleeping patterns, her type of upbringing, her character, etc.

3rd is my nephew, Jojo (Joel, age 4, I suppose…lost count)!! Ok, yes, I know he’s my family member & he should be 1st instead of Gail, but erm… I don’t get to spend enough time with him to understand him well since he resides in Japan. The last time I spent with him in Singapore, when I was there for Moses kor2’s wedding, was priceless la. We bonded pretty fast & got along very well, til at times he would just tag along with me; him & his sister, Hannah.

Phoebe Ng (age 2) comes in 4th. This lil one is extremely cute when she smiles… can melt one’s heart. When she’s not naughty or cheeky, she’s a gem and a total darling. When she’s naughty, aiyoyo… susah lor. I spent quite a lot of time with her last weekend, and look after her & Nichol, while Aunty Helen, their po², had her time of rest & TV. We had little ‘games’ and fun, had pillow fights, times of singing (this one is VERY cute), played catching, and many more.

Top 5 place is Jeremy Lam (age 6, I reckon). Haha…this kiddo is really cute la. I got to spend only ONE day with him while I was at his place for a short break last year-end. All I could recall is that I stayed at pastor Tim’s house for a night. I bought stickers for lil Jeremy, push the shopping cart that he’s in while we went shopping in Giant hypermarket, chat & played with him, and that’s about it! That kiddo called me up today to tell me that it’s his birthday & he wanted to show me hi birthday present, which is a dinosaur book! Aiyo…SOOooo cute!!

Coming in 6th is Hannah (age 9). Yup, her brother is in 3rd place. This girl is VERY sweet & absolutely polite. She’s one child whom I really look up to. The respect she gives to the elders is amazing. Talk about what the Japanese culture has done to her. Heh. I love her for her amazing ‘woman-ness’ and for being very nice to talk to as well. I spent quite a lot of time with her while I was in Singapore last year. I’ll be the one taking care of her while her parents look after Jojo, especially when we go shopping ;)
My cousin, Ying Wei a.k.a Hui² (age 10) comes in 7th. We’re not that close, but she’s VERY alike me, even the looks!! *gasps* When she was younger, she reminded my mum of me when I was younger. Haha… I’m more like the Tan family when it comes to looks, not so much of the Wong. She’s also very fun & a darling. We speak mandarin (yup, a very slight communication breakdown at times) & can just sit & chat with each other on school & family.

At 8th place is a little girl whom I can never forget, & am still searching for her. Her name’s Irene Ng (age 5), and ooo… she’s a very sweet darling as well. I first met her at church camp this year. We actually spent quite some time together, building sand castles, taking care of her when her mum’s not around, and playing ball games with her. Haha… reminiscing those times I spent with her puts a smile on my face. At church camp, she was one kid whom I constantly put my entire focus on. Everything that has to do with a kid has to do with Irene. I saying her like crazy then, & even now whenever I go back to church, I’ll look out for her.

So far, these are the children who light up my life. There are 2 more places in the top 10 list of ‘My Precious Gems’. There are plenty of children who walk in & out of my life especially in 2004, when I worked at the kindergarten as a teacher assistant, but these 8 kids are the ones whom I can say as those who made a difference in my life. Children are special. Although I don’t deny that I’ve had a phobia towards children, and I still have, I can’t help but learn to love these little fellas as though they’re my kiddos.

“Let the little children come to Mem and donot forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14 (NKJV)
